That should get me back on the road >for the summer. That sounds like a lot for two little heads and for little ol' valves. Here is how I would trouble shoot... Pull the plugs and left valve cover Verify left valve adjustment. A tight valve will act stuck open when hot. If proper valve clearance exists and valve will open and close during rocker action, then it is time to pull the head Set the head upside down on workbench on blocks so gasket surface is horizontal, with spark plug in. Pour in light oil, kerosene, wd-40 or similar substance, see how long it takes to drain out of head through valve. If it doesn't drain, valves are GOOD, If it does drain, look for wet port to identify bad valve Bring to machine shop, tell them to replace the bad valve, verify seat is good, grind new valve, lap BOTH valves. If the seat is bad, tell them to replace BOTH seats with hardened ones. If port is just a little damp, valves just might need lapping, get some valve grind compound and a piece of gas hose as a valve lap tool. Have a relaxing hour per valve lapping to perfection! Oh yes, put rings in, same size as what is coming out. Cheap insurance against tearing down jug again in three weeks to fix excessive oil consumption out of repaired cylinder. Date: Tue, 6 Jul 1999 12:04:13 EDT From: MMxyzp@aol.com Subject: Re: BMW: R11RS luggage rack upgrade Yes, they do. It is quite expensive. I have heard from several dealers that the pre-cut slots do not guarantee a fit which will be free from gaps after the rack is installed. One of the problems with fit is that the rubber grommets which fill the slots are located in space by being hung on the subframe for the rack. As this is put in, there is a little bit of adjustment available. Same with the tail section. You have a situation where (mal)adjustments add to each other in a cumulative fashion. I found doing the slots myself with a dremel mototool that it wasn't a big deal. The grommets have lips which will cover small errors. If you use contact paper or tape to make a template, and remove material slowly (I started with a hand coping saw, then the mototool), it should be relatively easy to get a good fit. It is also cheaper to have a dealer do an install than to get the precut tail section. I have also heard rumors of a template for cutting the slots being available from BMW, but no one seems to have one. I doubt it is of much value anyway, for reasons stated. Hope this helps. A copy of the birth certificate is good. The notarized affidavit mentioned in this list is also an excellent idea. A friend brought his grandson fishing with us in Ontario and he was asked to go inside and provide documentation. Fortunately it was in order and we were allowed to leave within 15 minutes. This is the only time I have been stopped while fishing. Motorcycles are another matter entirely. I get stopped about a third of the time when riding alone. With a small group someone in the group gets stopped about half the time. Motorcycle enthusiasts must fit into some profile for nere do wells. If you have time you can cross at Sault Ste. Marie and take Hwy 17 to 6 and go to Manitoulin island and take the ferry from South Baymouth to Tobermory. Its a long ride. (3 hours or so) but it is beautiful. I would hit a bump, and then have a series of long bounces up and down. On smooth roads it wasn't bad, but on SOME roads, it became very annoying. I have looked at some alternatives: 1) Change out shock insert with OEM item for about $170 2) Replace entire shock assembly with a Koni 3) Progressive makes a nice one I am told for about $500... Using the cummulative knowledge of the list, what guidance is available? Is the Koni or Progressive assembly really worth it? Does it give me better handling? less float? no more bobbing? I listened patiently, and when the agent finally stopped, I suggested that maybe the best thing I could do was to turn around and spend my vacation money in the States. Any advice would help so I don't break or >scratch anything I don't have to. Having been in this area several times, there are two ways that I can think of getting there to replace the bulb, IF the cover does not come off (I am not sure if it is THAT easy). You can get to the area via the back of the fairing. Remove the fours screws that hold the outside of the black cover. (this piece is the one that has the switch blanks and the lamp that you are talking about). There are also two hidden screws that are underneath and to the left/right of the light (Be careful putting these back in since they only go into the fiberglass and are easily stripped). That will loosen everything enough to give you access to the area. This is the method that I would use. The other, would be to come from the front side, but I would not recommend it unless you have something else to do in there. Remove the windshield screws (there are about 8 - 10) and then lift the whole assembly up. I don't think that it would be necessary to remove it. But after lifting it up you should see the back side of the unit. I hope that you do not need either method and can get the damn bulb out from the cover. ------------------------------

A good glue to use would be a cyanoacrylite (sp?) type glue. Basically, super-glue. You can get humongous bottles of the stuff at hobby shops. (the ones that sell remote control airplanes are most likely to carry it.) Get an 8 or 12 oz bottle of the stuff. Be VERY VERY VERY careful about gluing your hands/fingers/etc together - the stuff has the consistency of water, and can run all over the place. Also, if the wood has a finish on it, it's possible that the finish resists whatever glue you're using. If you're gluing velcro, be careful about the stuff soaking thru the velcro fabric.
