A common error when carrying a lot of gear is to have the weight to high and/or to far to the rear. I always pack heavy/high density stuff as close to the bike's center of gravity as possible. This usually means behind me on the passenger seat and in front of me in a large tank bag or tank panniers. Anything high and behind the rear axle should be light/low density stuff like sleeping bags or a Thermarest or an insulated jacket liner. Of all three, I'd recommend the Clymer first since: 1) The factory manual costs $$$ 2) Clearer pictures, larger type. 3) I've noticed at least one section (depressurizing fuel lines) where the Clymer offers more alterative techniques. 4) More information on later model bikes (the Hanes has a smaller section, and the factory manual doesn't address this as far as I know) . This however doesn't apply to a 1988 bike. All three manuals do offer some complementary information; but the Clymer is a good start. Very important: the IBMWR tech pages: www.ibmwr.org/ktech.html Note: there is an error in the Clymer manual; I think they recommend 32 Nm torque for the oil drain plug. The correct torque is somewhere between 18-20 Nm. ------------------------------

There are two after-market repair manuals available for your bike, from Haynes and Clymer. I find them six of one and half-dozen of another. they're different from each other, but neither has a reputation of being superor. OTOH, I prefer the Haynes. It is a full size seat pad that can be strapped to the seat or do what I did and installed it under the cover of my Corbin foam on a BMW seat pan. I think it's great. It filters out the road vibration you get in the seat and on long days it eliminates sore spots where the bones touch down. the gell can be carved to match the seat with a sissors and then use a butane tourch to smooth the gell to a feather edge. If you make a mistake you can join the cut with the tourch like new. Good luck. Steve (one flying brick) 1988,1986 ------------------------------
Date: Wed, 07 Jul 1999 09:43:38 +0200 From: Jan Richards <jan@mojo.europe.dg.com> Subject: BMW: valve adjust help needed On the older airheads I've always set them by putting the feeler gauge under the rocker and adjusting till I'm only just able to rotate the pushrod with my fingers. Which doubles as a check for bent pushrods at the same time (never found one). On my car (Rover Mini) I have a tool called a 'Click Adjust' that has a screwdriver blade down the middle of the 1/2" drive and a handle welded onto the drive as well. Put the correct socket on it, with the handle undo the locknut. Use the screwdriver bit to take the clearance down to zero (rotating it clockwise till it bottoms out). Back the screwdriver out counting the clicks (on a smaller ratchet). Lock the position of the screwdriver bit and do the nut up. It's very quick and accurate (after you've worked out how many 'clicks' are required), it also has the advantage of taking care of wear on the rocker tips. Feeler gauges ignore the slight indents on the tips (they only allow for a flat surface) so the gap tends to be set slightly larger especially as the tips wear. But this appears to be more of a problem in automotive engines. Airhead rockers seemed to be designed to minimise this. Have never seen one of these that will accept universal bits or has the right drive for an airhead engine which is a shame. Jan ------------------------------

Joe, I had the 'comfort bars' recently installed and I love them! As I have said on the list before, at 5'8" this bike fits me perfectly. At my height with the stock windshield, the protection was perfect with the stock bars and still OK (but not as good) with the higher bars. It is bullshit expensive however! I saw the pic in ON of the parabellum windscreen...not for me. And need I add...YMMV? I bought the Multivario and returned it a week later. Once again, bullshit expensive and while definitely 'different' looking (pod-like) it just didn't hold that much. I couldn't cotton to the constant contact my chest and gut were making with it, which I guess would happen with any tankbag and that riding position. It didn't move much, but it moved enuf to put innumerable tiny scratches in the tank paint no matter how much I cleaned the bottom. Maybe with the higher bars, I might reconsider a tank bag, but I am waiting to see the Bagster version. It seems to only be available in Germany right now, I can't figure out how to price one or get one!!
