Date: Wed, 07 Jul 1999 09:33:59 -0500 From: Jon Diaz <Jon.Diaz@tellabs.com> Subject: BMW: Blueberry Blast Bow-Out As you may have guessed, we didn't make it. We left as scheduled at noon on Friday, and 30 miles south of work my K75 decided to quit generating electrical power. After suffering the ultimate indignity of having my wife's 30 year old /5 tow it a mile to a gas station, I disassembled the bike and pronounced it dead. It appeared as tho my brand new battery dropped a cell, and the voltage regulator burned itself up trying to keep up with the load. Sue carried the voltage regulator to a local auto parts store looking for a replacement and they just laughed..... :) We got the bike back home that afternoon, and decided to abort the trip to Avinger. I worked the phones while hanging out at the gas station and we reorganized our plan to ride thru Missouri and Arkansas instead, eventually winding up in Harrison to meet our friends Greg and Kellye from Plano on Sunday pm. (Greg and Kellye were originally going to meet us at the Blueberry Blast....maybe some of you met them). I loaded my Suzuki for the trip since riding without a fairing seemed like the way to go. After a couple of really nice days of riding, we arrived in Harrison mid-day and waited for Greg and Kellye while mostly submerged in the motel pool. Kellye eventually called that afternoon saying Greg had an accident near Russellville and had broken his collarbone. We helped them as much as we could from afar, but luckily they had some local GoldWingers come across their path who went above and beyond the call of duty on this particular day. [And a side blessing was that Greg can finally get rid of his Concours and buy that R1100RS he's wanted ever since his wife got one. :)] The accident really took the wind out of our sails, and we still had 620 miles to ride back to Elgin the next day in ugly heat and humidity. We left as early as possible and got about halfway home before the temps became fairly unbearable. The rest of the trip home was a grind. Sorry to have missed the party. Check out their web page on the S. (www.rka-luggage.com/pages/14gallry/01bmw/page4/model4.html\). it was around $100 in black, a bit more for the 'yellow'. This bag has worked well for me during my last 3000 miles of riding. I usually use it in the folded down position but when i forgot my saddle bags while picking up new bmw boots and oil at my local bmw dealer in Savoy, IL (btw, great place, best dealer i've ever dealt with), i was able to expand the bag to hold my tennis shoes and 4 qts. of the only lubricant that maintains my warranty. It has dulled the paint a bit right next to where the strap meets the seat; i would like to add a piece of something there on the tank and would appreciate any suggestions. no scratches anywhere, though, and the dullness disappears with a little spray wax. it doesn't obscure the gauges in the fully folded out position or get in the way of anything important. they got it out to me in something less than a week. i've also got the higher bars. Incredible bike!!!! My all time favorite--i just wish bmw had a better system for holding down the seat cowl, lost it on my last ride. ------------------------------

How many Lexington, Ohio's did you find on your map? It's the one in Ohio..... Sorry, I couldn't resist. Lexington is in central Ohio, near Loudonville, near Mohican State Park. If you burn out from all the motorcycle excitement at Vintage Days, you can head slightly east and then south, and find roads south of US 33 in southern Ohio that rival any twisty roads I've been on anywhere. And they won't be crowded, maybe everybody's back at the racetrack. Ohio being a densely populated state, there will be camping all around. BUT, you probably won't find anything with available room right next to the racetrack. Out a few miles from the track, I'd bet that you will. For me, it's a day trip about 100 miles southeast of Toledo. HTH. Doug Grosjean Gr.8 Designs Pemberville, Ohio ------------------------------
