Yes it does. Analog is at power ALL the time. The digital is on in a "pulse" fashion sending out bits and turning off as much as it can. Analog to digital conversion takes place and then it compresses the DATA just like in a zip file, and booms it off. It is off more than it is on. Plus there are more power levels I believe in the digital phones than the analogs. It keeps transmitt power as low as it can and is changing that strength like crazy. Its magic. -- --- -------------------------------------------------------------------- Ambassador BMW MOA | Brian Curry | A society that gets rid of all its "DEERsSLAYER" | troublemakers goes downhill. And No, I didn't do anything dumb like let it expire! Seems that some countries (New Zealand for one) require that your passport remains valid for several months AFTER you leave their country, or they won't let you in. Even a valid outbound ticket won't satisfy them! I almost missed it, caught it at the last minute in the fine print on the ticket. So, if you're planning an overseas trip better double-check for this booby trap while you still have time to get a renewal on a Non-rush basis. Did I hear, CAKES? errrr, my birthday is the 29th of April. Back in 1979 it was, a sunny spring day in Kansas. The type of day that brings the masses to the heartland, not too hot nor too cold. Since that beautiful day, many lives have been brightened with that delivery. Physcially impossible if both transmitters are set up > equally. > I'm glad I waited for the end of this discussion . . . I believe the difference is that analog (AMPS) uses the 800 mhz band and digital (PCS) uses the 1900 mhz band, and there's a difference in signal propagation between the frequencies. The internets contain more debates than you could shake a stick at about signal propagation in big cities among buildings, in the country through trees, etc. And yes, there's some 800 and 850 mhz digital service, which shouldn't have a significant difference in propagation from 800 mhz analog. Then there's the factor that older AMPS phones often put out more power, but spread-spectrum CDMA digital signals can often keep a connection through interference, at low power levels, etc. Without getting too deep into the technological debate, I started this by saying that Verizon shows their analog (800 mhz AMPS) signals not travelling as far as their digital (1900 mhz CDMA) signals at a specific location that's on the far side of a hill from the tower (the tower being not on top of the hill, but on the far side of the hill, meaning the hill is between the tower and my location). If you disagree, take it up with Verizon's engineers, they get paid to know a lot more about cell phones than I do. http://www.davidebsmith.org ------------------------------ ---------- Article Copyright (c) 2007 IBMWR and the author(s).
