The digital is on in a "pulse" fashion sending out bits and turning off as much as it can. Analog to digital conversion takes place and then it compresses the DATA just like in a zip file, and booms it off. It is off more than it is on. Plus there are more power levels I believe in the digital phones than the analogs. It keeps transmit power as low as it can and is changing that strength like crazy. Its magic. Dave writes: Yup, I learned this the hard way at RA Biltmore last year. Left home with a full charge on my verizon phone, after 2 hours on the Biltmore Estate, dead as a doornail. Puzzled, I was told that in a weak or no signal field, the phone will squander its charge in a fruitless effort to maintain comm by upping its variable power transmit (receive?) capability. Now, when traveling, I turn the phone off to maintain my ability to transmit out, while somewhat limiting others ability to reach me at the moment. -- Dave Johnson Boone NC The Kilometer High City 1100RT V65 ------------------------------

The best three pieces I've ever read about how CDMA phones work - I almost comprehend what's happening after reading them - are Does my CDMA phone drain the battery faster when it says it is "searching"? http://denbeste.nu/cdmafaq/search.shtml Does my CDMA phone drain the battery faster if I'm operating in a fringe area? http://denbeste.nu/cdmafaq/fringe.shtml What is the phone doing when it's idle? http://denbeste.nu/cdmafaq/idle.shtml and more here: http://denbeste.nu/cdmafaq/index.shtml http://www.mobileworld.org/gsm_about.html As far as understanding GSM goes, lets just say, CDMA was invented by an entrepreneurial company, and GSM was invented by a committee of European government agencies, and leave it at that. http://www.davidebsmith.org ------------------------------

But it's okay, you'll get out in a year or two. And of course, the cop will just steal your vehicle. Anyone remember a college professor from Tucson who was murdered in Mexico. The US police finally solved the case when they discovered the Mexican police chief who murdered him driving his pickup truck. Personally, I reccommend that no one go to Mexico unless there is a good compelling business reason to do so. The pure PCS networks are entirely 1.9Ghz and don't work very well out of urbanized areas as they require several towers per mile ------------------------------
