Have you been there much? Mexico seems to be the stuff of more urban legends than reality suggests. I have traveled in quite a few places around the world in the last 36 years. Mexico is one of my favorites, especially the smaller villages and towns. I have generally found that, if I treat the locals - including the police - with respect, I receive respect in return. Every single time I hear a Norte relating a personal tale of trouble and strife, I have little trouble envisioning how he or she got in trouble - if indeed the story has much truth to it. And, I've heard a bunch of hearsay that I'm particularly sure never occurred as told. For whatever reasons, Mexico excites the imagination of urban legend pronouncers, especially among the repeaters of hearsay. You know some: they hate Paris, too. They changed planes there once, and just hated it. If you are frightened of what might be in the closet or just outside the window, you should stay home in the good ol' you ess of aye, with your handgun under your pillow. But if you have the reasonable courage and sense of adventure of a traveler, Mexico is a beautiful, colorful, polite, artistic, musical and interesting place. It is a very different place than the border towns, and the food is interesting and good. As with any place you go outside the US and Canada, I suggest you only drink bottled water. And don't get caught boffing the police chief's girlfriend, if you know what's good for you. Same as here, pretty much, and the jails aren't so nice. If you think other countries' police are worrisome, just try popping off at one of the (otherwise unemployable) 'homeland security' bozos we have in the US airports, and see what you get for your effort. Date: Sun, 30 Dec 2007 04:01:05 +0000 From: twade5@comcast.net Subject: Re: [BMWMc] BMW RA Rally 2008 Maybe I should clarify. Iron miners spend a lot of time in a cold, usually damp, mine environment, and need a hot meal midway through their shift. A "pastie" is one of the tradional meals. Basically just like a large pot pie, typically filled with meat and potatoes, etc. Many of them are put into a canteen cup, much like a military canteen cup, then cooked. One canteen cup full of pot pie would make a pretty hefty meal. In some mining areas, pasties are available from many local cafes. Try one, if you get the chance. We have a guy here in jail right now that got caught last week for 10 murders around here. They caught a guy in the woods a half mile behind my house that was hiding out after killing three people. There was another murderer that escaped from jail and tried to kill two more people in Cape Girardeau just down the highway 10 miles away. They got him right at the end of my driveway. They found a body several years back 2 miles down the road of an elderly woman from town that was murdered and dumped out here. The church I go to was broken into last month and the offering stolen and the bar down the road too, twice. Guy is in jail now though. And yet still half the trucks around here sit out by the barns with the keys in them. I have been spending all the time I can in Mexico for 25 years now and working winters there for the last ten years guiding tours for Motodiscovery. I still also take trips of my own there so I can get out of the cold here. We took our 12 year old grand daughter down for two weeks last year in the car. I guess I have been about everywhere down there. Treat them with respect and they will pay you back ten times over. All the "experts" who had this friend who went to Cancun once................... The Mexicans have helped me so many times when one of my customers needed help or I did I can not count them. The police have done things like send out a motorcycle cop and a police truck to stop traffic and guide us out of a city. All I did was ask the motorcycle cop the night before if he knew some side streets that would make it easier to get 15 bikes all out of town in rush hour. They do hold people until settlement is made or at least agreed on. No insurance and you stay until see how you are going to pay. Have an accident that is your fault and they will hold your vehicle until you pay the fines and the "cost to society" Yes it is different. But drive through Cairo IL at 2mph over and get a $100 speeding ticket. Every time. Then the insurance company sticks it to you. Right now there is a cop sitting on the side of the road waiting on the people to leave the bar and then arrest them. That is NOT legal. But they do it every weekend from about now until closing time and it is your word against theirs. Not condoning drinking and driving, but there are laws on both sides. Just an example that there are crooked cops everywhere. My Scoutmaster when I was a kid was the town's drug cop. Got busted for.........You guessed it selling drugs. You know that the Mexicans are scared to come up here because of our gangs and crime? They see it on TV. Their biggest serious crime problem is drug gangs. Because the drugs are coming HERE. We cause it. There is only one stereotype that I find true. Don't drive at night. Well and I don't drink tap water much either. Off the soapbox and to the bed. The roosters will be crowing before long. That is if someone does not steal them during the night. John ------------------------------

Great article in the latest Owner's News! Having had a slave cylinder failure, I learned a few things that may be of interest to your readers. 1. You said that it is impossible to tell if you have a leaky slave cylinder. There are actually a few indications to look for. As mine slowly failed (over a month or so) it began to suck air into the system. The engagement point of my clutch got closer and closer to the bar. That can be one indication. I decided to bleed the clutch line. The old fluid came out very dark, almost black. I think it was sucking in grease from the throwout bearing. Dark fluid could be another indication of a slave cylinder going bad. 2. I read about a neat trick after I replaced my slave cylinder. In your article you mentioned that the slave cylinder is sealed with a gasket. I read that someone cut a slot in the bottom of the gasket so that fluid could leak out if the cylinder failed again. That would give you an indication of an impending failure and may save your clutch. I thought it was a pretty good trick. I wish I'd read about it before I replaced my slave cylinder. And I remember the heat...we got on the road at about 4am and stopped by 10 am at a campground coming home. We stopped at my sister's place in Ohio for several days because it really was just too hot. Gene had his 1964 R90 conversion with Urals sidecar at the time. I rode in the sidecar. And it stays light out later at nite up there in the UP and as long as it is light I eat so I put about 10 lbs on on that trip. My first National was Lake Placid (81 or 82?), first rally was early 80's, Dutch Country Riders in the old Police grounds. I suspect the designers were trying to keep the outside from the inside with a full seal. The small port likely would still do it.
