Date: Wed, 28 Mar 2007 07:10:23 -0400 From: Anton Largiader <anton@largiader.com> Subject: [BMWTech] A day in the shop For some reason I thought that someone, somewhere might be interested to know what happens in a small shop. Yesterday was kind of typical. Started out not getting much done early on. Doing stuff like this. The I clean up the shop a bit. Then continued reassembly of an R1100 motor for a while: installing the remaining cylinder and the front timing gear. At some point some dude calls me about changing a tire for his Virago (wheel off bike). Normally I don't do non-BMW, but tubeless and wheel off bike, OK as long as I can balance it. He brings it over, yes I can balance that, leave it here and I'll see when I can fit it in. Back to the R11 motor. I jumped out of sequence and decided at that point to check out the cylinder heads which looked very good when I put them on this bike only a few months ago. Good thing I did; the valves were not nearly as nice as I remembered them being so all eight of them got trimmed and I started on the valve seats. A customer stopped by and chatted for a while. It was after noon at this point and I really needed to get this motor off the table and pull the tranny out of a PD in time to get the input shaft to the machine shop, so I put the motor stuff into a box and roll the PD onto the lift. Another customer calls to see if I can put a back tire on his Replika. Sure, drop it off. I had ordered the tire months ago and was glad it would finally get sold. I guessed it would be about $150 in all. OK, nice BCR in the driveway, Virago wheel leaning against the doorway, PD on lift, R11 motor in box. I spend some time on the phone with the GM of the dealership where I do some work; looks like I'll be starting to put time in there starting late April this year. Last year it was early April but the industry is down a bit this year and so far their techs are keeping up no problem. Back to the PD. Less than two hours, input shaft in hand, it needs to be cut for the circlip and reconditioned at the taper. Too late to go the machine shop now. Might as well change the BMW tire. Done. Well hell, might as well do the other one also. Take it off, OK, damn, which way was it mounted? Speedo on left or right? No arrows on rim. Call owner, leave message, which side is the speedo sensor on? He calls back and leaves message: "See how one side has a bearing seal and the other has none but has these two prongs? The prong side is the speedo sensor side." Meredith can't understand why I'm laughing hysterically. A few more phone calls gets it straightened out. Virago speedo on left just like BMW. BCR guy comes to get bike. I look up the price: one thirty something for the tire alone. Damn. Shouldn't have said "not more than $150." Oh well, he's in a cash bind and on the verge of having to sell the bike which I really don't want to see. Plus with these tires he'll be back soon. So, three input shafts ready for the machine shop (two from before), tires done, back to the PD to see what I can do before I roll it off the lift. Oil behind the flywheel. OK, clutch off, flywheel off, looks like the rear main. Really wanted to stare at it for a while and put it on the list for the next day, but I got my second wind and replaced the rear main and oil pump cover O-ring. I am on a 2000 R1100 that is stock as far as I know. I pulled the stock Bosch FR6-DDC plugs and was about to install a pair of NGK BKR7EKC-N when I noticed something different. The electrodes extend a little higher off of the base for the NGK plugs than the Bosch plugs. So I measured and found for the Bosch: 0.152 inches and NGK: 0.230 inches. I noticed in my Haynes manual that the NGKs are specified for the R1150, but a different NGK is called out for the R1100. The specifications manual that came with the bike call for the Bosch's. The question (for the engine guys) is will I get into trouble using the BKR7EKC's in a stock R1100 (electrodes hitting the pistons)? It's 180 degrees away from my brief experience working at a Harley dealership. Crowded conditions, tight deadlines, a boss that liked to yell at his staff for fun, and 13 hour days. I did a battery R & R on the road last month (by choice) and also appreciated what can get done with the OEM tool Kit. What are some "must" have tools for home garage? Outside of basic spanners and sockets. Not Model specific. I suppose it depends if you have one (like me) or a garage full in the queue for paying customers. When I'm deconstructing a bike, I take careful notes -- sometimes digital photos -- along the way. When it comes to putting it back together, I start at the bottom and work up. I don't know specifically about radio shack ones, but I've had several noname and offbrand elcheapo DMMs that have worked just fine. got a really junky one I picked up at a hardware store for like $10 in my drawer at work, a properly charged UPS battery reads about 12.8V (after sitting a day or so out of the UPS), thats good enough for me. yes, I'd suggest sanity checking a cheapo meter, plug it into a running vehicle, and you should read around 13.6-13.9V or whatever, your bikes battery should be about 12.6-12.8 in the morning, if you get anything close to that, its fine for automotive use. the ohms scale is mostly used for simple continuity testing, you don't really need to know if that lamp is 4.8 ohms or 5.2 ohms, you just need to know its not a dead short or open... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Mar 2007 12:19:20 -0400 From: tpcutter@aol.com Subject: Re: [BMWTech] A day in the shop <<This is the advantage of having your own shop. Then you gotta stop to get the day's parts order in to your suppliers, and package up the wrongly-sent item and return it, then you gotta go to the post office again, etc, etc. The good part is that when you feel like going racing, you can put the race bike on the lift and work on it, you can call up Anton and say "Hey, let's go to the track, and he can do it because he has a good boss, too... I open the boxes remove the valves from wrapping wash them off line them up on the bench. Shortly there after I wonder why I have 6 exhaust valves and 2 intake valves. check the boxes. Someone someplace has put exhaust valves in an intake valve box. Several phone calls later and hey its lunch time... after lunch pull a gear off the end of the old crank. Launch the gear off the crank and across the floor. Spend the rest of the afternoon with a small file cleaning up the ends of the gear teeth where they hit the concrete so that the new crank now turns and the gear train feels nice. I'm a tinkerer instead. But I can relate to the thread here in that I've had to get into my R1100RS (and prolly w a y over my head). I know it comes apart easier than going back together, but that didn't stop me. The problem was a bad vibration in fifth gear ... gearbox was the diagnosis (after I talked about it w/mechanic & friends for a week). So I took this: http://members.cox.net/r1100rs/pix/bike1.jpg and turned it into this last weekend. http://members.cox.net/r1100rs/pix/bike2.jpg I got the gearbox out and took to Dave Campbell for repair. Now I'm working on the long list of things I never got around to doing when I was riding the bike. Like the upgraded 1200 tensioner for the left jug. And the tiny speedo and tach lights that burned out last year. Made it tough to see how fast ... at 0'dark thirty every morning. And much cleaning and tidying up zip-ties on the extra wires I put in for GPS and charging the bike. And cleaning all the parts I took of the bike. Which reminds me: Why do I need to vent the crankcase fumes back thru my airbox?? I know the *green* issue, butt I've never seen a messier, oilier airbox. And that gunk is all over the intake side of both throttlebodies. It can't be doing the valves any good as that stuff gets burnt. Any solutions to this?? Why can't I just button up the vent hole in the airbox and vent the crank stuff elsewhere?? Butt I digress ... I was just enjoying the thread and wanted to contribute. My last point is that because of the next picture, I am now able to take the time and enjoy working on the RS, cause I don't have to get it back up and running ASAP, as I have always had to do in the past. I like my flukes, though admittedly its not small and easy to carry on the road trips. I have had good service from flukes. Through my own fault, I have blown them up 3 times roughly. They repair or send replacement at about half the cost of the original. Nice. I also dropped mine from 15 feet one day, destroyed the display. I had blown it up not too long before than and was pretty freshly repaired. They fixed it, and no charge, they just said it was still under warranty. I like that sort of service! They were made in US, probably overseas now, but that was nice to start with as well. Of course, I used to want nothing from Japan, now its China and the like. Japan doesn't look so bad (we ignore of course the fact that two cycles are from Japan, one from Germany as is the car) Greg in Anchorage AK ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Mar 2007 16:13:56 +0900 From: "James B. As proof I offer the old analog Sanwa meter here which I'm sure must have been made in the early 60s. Still works great too! The Sanwa I have is by no means top of the line, but it's a real nice meter. Especially for 50 bucks. If I drop it I'll get another and still be way ahead of a Fluke. Actually it comes in a real nice case where you don't have to remove it to use it so if it does drop, it won't be damaged, it's strapped into the case. http://easternbeaver.com/ Motorcycle Relay Kits, ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Mar 2007 07:55:25 -0700 From: John R Pierce <pierce@hogranch.com> Subject: Re: Fw: Fw: [BMWTech] Favorite tools.. Seriously, the Japanese love this shit with the big names if it works or not. Glad to hear how long they've been around. I guess they were instrumental in helping keep the WWII planes flying then ;-) It would be interesting to find out the history of Sanwa. Most likely though they don't go back that far. Like most of this stuff the Japanese cloned, er developed in the 60s. Still, they had to have something to trouble shoot those WWII planes too! http://easternbeaver.com/ Motorcycle Relay Kits, ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Mar 2007 21:32:28 +0200 From: "Clive Liddell" <cliddell@mweb.co.za> Subject: RE: Fw: Fw: [BMWTech] Favorite tools.. More precisely, I'm reading in Clymer's that I'd need the tool 11 2 100 to tighten the bearing cap nuts of the connecting rods to the crankshaft an additional 83 degrees. Is there a way I could do it without the special tool ? I could give the nuts an additional 90 degrees easier than 83. They do the work on My Puddle Jumper, a 1989 Honda TransAlp. Anyway, the RS is needing some tires pretty soon, and Steve, the shop tech, was telling me that with radial tires I should run the front tire 2 psi higher than the rear. He worked for Dunlop in Europe in the early 90's and that was how they set up their tires on the race bikes back then. My BMW sticker doesn't say that, but I don't believe everything I read. Your thoughts? I really don't know how to measure the difference, except with the 'this feels good' or 'wow, I thought I was going to slide out' type of perception. Much like butt-pucker readings; it's not the type of information that qualifies as data. Was that setup on a BMW oilhead or something else with a different weight distribution? Do you run at early 90's in Europe race speeds in your normal riding? I strongly suspect current road tires have a different set of design specs minimum. There has been a lot of recent talk that the "10% pressure increase" rule no longer applies to proper tire pressure establishment. It takes a different pressure to get the tire to the "right" temperature. How ordinary mortals determine that the tire is at the right temperature I sure have not heard. Racer's really don't care about tire pressure, they do care about tire temperature. Tom Cutter has told me that the "tire guy" checks the tire temps coming off the track, and they adjust the tire pressure based on that. It can vary from rider to rider for the same tire, depending on their riding style, and how gutsie they are. I have never seen a spec for "achieve this tire temp" for proper operation. It is just alluded to that there is one. It might be proprietary. I suspect that DATA will be hard to come by. And it will depend a lot on the type of riding you are doing right then, http://web.archive.org/web/20030414170300/robietech.com/gps.htm -- -- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Ambassador BMW MOA | Brian Curry | In a time of universal deceit, "DEERsSLAYER" | telling the truth is a revolutionary act. The tire pressure is based on load and with the aims of managing sidewall flex and the size of the contact patch. The ideal pressure will vary a little bit based on ambient (highway) temperature as well as your riding style and load. I don't know your tire sizes, but normally the rear will have a larger contact patch because of the necessary acceleration and weight bearing. Start with das Vaterland's recommended pressure based on your riding setup (solo, 2-up, luggage) and consider adjusting for personal mass if you're outside the 150-250lbs range. Choose a nice day, between 60 and 80f . Check the pressure when cold. Ride highway for an hour or so and check the pressure again. You should get a rise in pressure of something like 10-15% . I go for about 5lbs increase. Too much increase means the cold pressure was too low and the sidewalls are flexing enough to potentially overheat your tires. Too little increase and the tires are too stiff, won't wear well, and your traction will be sub-optimal. I'm not certain, but I'll bet the friend's experience has something to do with the significant breaking required during racing as well as the forward rider weight. Now you're on an RS which has a more forward riding position than mine (GS), but the sticker under the seat probably suggests more pressure in the rear. Der Vater knows best.
