I am sure that there are some very good synthetic gear oils out there. I just do not see any reason to change a successful choice. I recommend annual driveline oil changes unless the client does extremely high mileage or severe service. FWIW- heavy truck rear ends get beat on a lot harder than the gears in a motorcycle. Not many of the trucks get the suggested annual oil change. Lots of them run 500,000 miles with no problems and no oil changes. I am overhauling the motor in a truck in my shop right now. Engine made a million two hundred thousand. Rear ends have never been touched and I think the oil might have been changed once or maybe twice since new. And yes, it is true, when overhaul time comes I have no doubt that lots of parts will hit the scrap bin that could have been reused if the oil had been changed. My point being- I think that the final drive and the transmission will run a long time between rebuilds even with out regular oil changes. How the units are used or abused probably has a lot more to do with their life expectancy than how often the oil is changed. Based on what I have seen and Mr. Cutters' experience changing the transmission and final drive oil yearly seems reasonable. Of course in my case at my current ride rate of zero miles over the last 6 months I think I may extend my drain interval and still expect my transmission and final drive will have a long service life :-( Bryan in Texas. ------------------------------

It's the thin plastic cover that seals the top of the start button thats missing, due to sun exposure fatigue. I guess the spring under there already disappeared : ) The stub still there for the start button has some spring action underneath it, and still starts the bike fine. But it I'm sure it will fail if I leave it like that. So is just the start/on-off switch replaceable, or do you have to replace the whole right grip switch assembly ? If I have to buy a whole grip/switch assembly , I'd rather just relocate the start button and put a blob of 3M weatherstrip sealer on the failed button to keep water out of it and still be able to use the on-off switch. Mechanically it's sound but cosmetically its going to require a lot of work. Gotta start somewhere and I thinks its got to be the alloy wheels and the alloy (bottom) part of the forks. These parts are grungy. Not just dirty and certainly not corroded. Sort of dirty and spotted. Tough to explain as I've never had to clean parts like this before. Any suggestions as how and what to use to clean these parts? Do the wheels ever get so bad they have to be painted? It does not "seal it" per se, it is the button you push. > The stub still there for the start button has some spring action underneath > it, and still starts the bike fine. But it I'm sure it will fail if I leave > it like that. You have not taken the electrical part off the grip either. When you remove it you will find that the plastic cylinder ends in a metal cap that contacts not one but two metal pieces sticking out that are the contacts. It is done that way cause it minimizes corrosion issues. With nothing to hold it off the metal pieces, the cap does not continuously start the bike only due to oxidation of the cap. I bet sometimes you turn on the ignition and the start almost runs but does not. That is why. It will operate that way a loooonnnnggg time. Just that the mixture will end up being rich due to starting enrichment. The idle will drop away too. When you fix the button issue, and the plugs clean up, the idle will come up. It is good to turn it down then. > So is just the start/on-off switch replaceable, or do you have to replace > the whole right grip switch assembly ? http://www.realoem.com and you too can see what are piece parts and > If I have to buy a whole grip/switch assembly , I'd rather just relocate the > start button and put a blob of 3M weatherstrip sealer on the failed button > to keep water out of it and still be able to use the on-off switch. Your call. Remember that corrosion is an issue and there is a why that they did it the way they did with the two metal tabs and the bridging cap. -- --- -------------------------------------------------------------------- Ambassador BMW MOA | Brian Curry | A society that gets rid of all its "DEERsSLAYER" | troublemakers goes downhill. Ummm... The truck rear drive oil capacity is what? Measured in gallons not CC. There is more oil there to be "used up" than what is in our bikes. I also suspect that the vent location is likely not as affected by road spray as our bikes are. I was doing some other work and noted that the leaking out the vent cap oil looked like chocolate milk, and not clear. Draining it, it did not look any better. Far worse than the oil I prophylactically drained from the trans. First time I have ever seen such, but this was the first drain for me on this bike. But there was water in there almost for sure. (I did not test.) > Based on what I have seen and Mr. Cutters' experience changing the > transmission and final drive oil yearly seems reasonable. And it is a decent monitor of rear drive condition. Better to find the drive going bad at home and not on the road in the middle of nowhere. Or you can see nowhere from there. -- --- -------------------------------------------------------------------- Ambassador BMW MOA | Brian Curry | A society that gets rid of all its "DEERsSLAYER" | troublemakers goes downhill. Hi Bruce, JUst in case the topic has been discussed there - or to ask yourself - go to the K1200LT forum at bmwlt.com. This is a great source of info. Almost as good as the these lists. 'Cept, mebbe, the Beeg list ;^) It does sound like the unit may be toast, though. I had kind of a similar problem but it was just a jammed CD. The dealer got it out and advised not to keep a CD in all the time. Since I use an iPod that's not a problem. Good luck Rick Povich ------------------------------

I borrowed a sand blaster from a friend, bought two 25lb boxes of 24 grit walnut shell from Harbor Freight (around $20/box i think), plugged up all the various holes on everything and blasted away. It did a pretty decent job of cleaning the alloy but when I had my rims off for re-spoking, I used a Scotch-Bright like wheel (from Sears) in my drill motor to futher brighten them. Be careful around any painted parts if blasting with the walnut shell. Even if they're just bouncing off the alloy parts, they are still abrasive and will cut into the paint. I formed up a cardboard enclosure to catch as much of the shell as possible for re-use and to keep them off of everything else. And,,, the blasted shell will get into EVERYTHING that's not really well closed up. -- alonzo BTW, after blasting the rims and hubs, they looked like they'd been brought back from the dead... a huge improvement. ------------------------------

There are two holes in the steering head, left and right. Try the other side? I would think that the problem would be the pin being bent or misaligned to the switch which would require removing the ignition switch. With a flashlight you can look at the action of the pin as you move the switch position from behind the headlight assembly. A Haynes service manual describes in more detail how do it. You would have to: Follow the ignition switch wiring back to a connector and disconnect it. It's under the tank. Remove the upper fork bridge. Drill off the heads of the security bolts. New ones will have to be used for installing the new switch. " Life Is Good " Harry Pendexter East Conway, NH 96R1100RA ------------------------------

What is the total travel that you are referencing the 50mm to? I would not expect any significant compression of the spring when the bike is on the center stand. > > > > Do I need to remove shock and adjust top ring to give me less sag. I have a feeling you do. I have found (on my spare w'screen for my '86 K100RT) that the best 'glue' for the job is; 1. Chloroform dispensed from a small metal/glass hypodermic syringe (if poss, the plastic ones melt!) A commercial glue is used in the Aircraft industry and it contains a mix of solvents--hard to get but slow to evaporate and therefore a far better 'glue'. (they are both actually solvents and melt the two 'faces' of the break and then evaporate ), In a lot of cases (and done carefully) there is almost no discernable 'crack' to be seen. You have to be VERY careful not tot let any "run' on the work or it will leave tracks. The w'screen should be taken off and supported so there is no strain on the piece to be 'glued'. Bud, I found mine at a Checker Auto lots of years ago. They are 12V 2W BA7 bulbs. #1551 is also printed on the box. The clearance is the gap between the cam lobe and the top of the individual valve assembly when the valve is completely sealed in the valve seat. Through use the valve and seat wear slightly - they may still seal but the clearance at the cam decreases. The only way for them to increase is if there is something preventing full closure of the valve, and that's when your bike starts to run like a bag full of spanners. Turn the handlebars as you try to engage it. If the pin cannot extend, the key shouldn't come out. As mentioned, the locking spot is not at full lock, and there is one on each side. I've seen the distorted metal thing a few times and it hasn't actually caused any problem. My impression, reading it, is that the mechanic use a rather expensive shotgun approach to a problem that he didn't understand. But that's just me, sitting here, not having heard your bike, and not having talked to the people he talked to. As you accelerate in any gear, at what RPM does the noise begin, and at what RPM does it stop? You wrote: > I had a serious problem last month. There was a short piece with the idea of using army surplus ammunition canisters as sidebags for airheads. Would anyone know where I could go to get a fuller explanation of how you rig the system. The MOA article had only the briefest explanation. Has anyone out there done it. Does it work as well as it seems?
