Are you saying that the spacer cannot be trapped between the impeller and the shaft? If so, that's simply not true. Bolt flange, impeller, spacer, shaft, all held together as a solid unit by the bolt torque. The inner part of the seal simply rides on the shaft and its position can vary depending on how you assemble things. If you mean that the spacer takes up all of the space between the impeller and the inner part of the seal, that's not true either. The new spacer is too short to even reach the seal when everything's assembled. > They are now on the third variant? Are you saying that the spacer cannot be trapped > between the impeller and the shaft? If so, that's simply not true. I went down and grabbed the spare water oil pum and pulled off the impeller to see. I stand corrected. The spacer has an internal shoulder that traps it on the nose of the shaft. > Bolt flange, impeller, spacer, shaft, all held together as a solid unit > by the bolt torque. And with water seals version two, you don't require the spacer to be holding the seal rotating element perpendular to and against the non-rotationg seal element. > If you mean that the spacer takes up all of the space between the > impeller and the inner part of the seal, that's not true either. The new > spacer is too short to even reach the seal when everything's assembled. Sounds like the spacers are "standard items" and they designed the pump with the first seal so that the spacer supported the moving element. When they went to the water pump seal II, the next standard spacer is "short" but the seal does not require the support. The moving element is supported by the shaft and blue goo. > > They are now on the third variant? > > The assembly hasn't changed since 2002 but the seal that is being sold > now is not the same as in the picture. I don't think there is a > functional difference. Hmmm... Have to look closely and take some pics this fall when the pump is changed out. Going back to the original point, at least with water pump seal II, the new "short" spacer, will depress the moving part enough that it clears the stationary part and still seals, even with with less than the "new installatoin" tool depression. Have to see with the water pump seal III. -- --- -------------------------------------------------------------------- Ambassador BMW MOA | Brian Curry | A society that gets rid of all its "DEERsSLAYER" | troublemakers goes downhill. The inner diameter of the C bar that I just received (new) is 16mm. The old S bar is 18mm. The new one will not receive the original bar-end weights, nor a new set of bar-end weights which I tried, nor the Napoleon bar-end mirrors. The design of the mirror mounts is such that I could make them fit by whacking away at some of the rubber, but the bar-ends have a fixed diameter in addition to the rubber compression fitting, so they're hopeless. Why? (That's rhetorical.) Anyone else experienced this? The ABS self-tests every 10 or 20 minutes, but waits until you stop or nearly stop. If it has already faulted, it will not try to reset; that only happens when you power down. If the lights are alternating as soon as you turn the key on, it's not a voltage issue. GACK! I *hate* intermittent problems!! When my K75 did that, the culprit turned out to be the ignition switch. I tried taking it apart and repairing it, but the plastic bits were too brittle and they broke, so I wound up replacing it. You might try wiggling or gently bending the key with the ignition on to see if you can get the symptoms to show themselves; if they will, that would be a more definitive diagnosis . . . . Good luck! -Don ------------------------------

I would say it is obviously electrical. If you don't know how to read a wiring diagram and do some testing of the electrical system, you have real poblems. Me I would find where I am loosing power. Then fix that. Or you can throw a lot of time and money at changing different stuff out, and see if you flail your way to success or apparent success, until the real cause fails again. Although I have heard that changing the air in the tires, has been reported fix bikes now and then. -- --- -------------------------------------------------------------------- Ambassador BMW MOA | Brian Curry | A society that gets rid of all its "DEERsSLAYER" | troublemakers goes downhill. Yeah, my first thought upon reading that was WATER!! Just dilute/neutralize it. Throw a potful on it, nail it with a hose. The rest of the stuff in the garage will dry out sooner or later. BMW actually specifies that technicians should wash the bike after performing brake service. That said, BMW's clearcoat is VERY durable, even when hit with brake fluid. The older and more oxidized the paint, the more the fluid stain will show. I have often rinsed brake fluid away with no consequences at all. Brake fluid definitely does NOT eat BMW paint away like some people think. -- anton at largiader.com http://largiader.com ------------------------------

Where to look first? can't believe its serious as it ran well when last used. Should you be able to hear the fuel pump after switching the ignition on ?? I know what it means, just seemed funny - the irony is that with brake fluid there and NO washing with water the bleed nipples are MORE likely to rust. Wash with water to remove that which seeks and holds water and there will be no rust. Sounds like a politician's rationale as to why he should pay himself more... No. You should hear it after releasing the start button. Try removing the FI brain and reseating it. After that, it is checking for fuel spark air. Fuel you likely have if you have the FP running. Spark is standard check. The question is too open ended. The full list would take DAYS and PAGES literally. Checking in the K-Tech FAQs might give you some hints. Date: Mon, 27 Aug 2007 01:59:39 +0000 From: "Juan Jacob" <juja56@hotmail.com> Subject: [BMWTech] Two stupid questions, I guess. I just did my FIRST long trip on my RT 1100 ('98, 25 k miles) with some fellas. Mexico City --> Zihuatanejo, the hard way: mountains, curves, donkeys, dogs, rocks on the road, rain, fog... you mention it! What a marvellous experience. 8 hours on the saddle, non-stop, not even for brunch, just refuelling! One day on the beach, fine. Next day, back home, same way. Now, two points: 1.- I'm an amateur in long trips, that's clear. After arriving to Zihuatanejo, my compagnions told me: "You don't drive well." I was shocked. "How's that?", I answered. "You go too fast, and in the begining of the curve, you brake. You have to do "counterwheeling"." I said: "OK. But what's that?" They said: "In a curve to the left, for example, you MUST push a little bit the handle, or wheel, TO THE RIGHT, so the bike "leans" more, you don't have to brake and, obviously, you go faster. As the rubber touches the floor, no problem, the bike will lean more and more, you won't fall. Don't worry." I thought: "Those guys must be crazy. That's not logical. The wheel to the other side? But let's make a try." I did. It works! First, I was afraid, of course, but then, gaining confidence, I was taking curves without brake, and much faster, of course. And then, I was enthousiastic about it... I was following the guys quite well... I assume you must have experienced that weird sensation like some soft drug... taking curves with exact timing, exact "counterwheeling", exact throttle at the end. That was exciting. I'm I, and my fellas, just Mexican suicidal and crazy men or what? We did 400 miles non-stop, 8 hours, and I can assure you, with very difficult roads and weather conditions, as I told. And thinking about it, I very well remember those guys in motocross bikes who do exactly that, but much more because the lack of adherence in dust and mud. All comments very welcome. Don't be afraid to tell me we are crazy. 2.- My rear Michelin (160/60 ZR18) had half life. Back to Mexico City, the tire was dead! I could see the "cords" (Cords, OK?) on the left side. I had a very hard time founding a tire like that in Mexico City because R18 is unusual. (Didn't know that). Fortunatly, I found a Metzeler. Fine. Now, the "stupid" question: why do bike tires "live" so little? And why so expensive, I mean, the "good" ones? I know, it depends on speed and road conditions, all right. But no bike tire will last more than 6, 8 K miles, right? Why are they so special? A regular car tire will last 35 000 miles. A good one, more. Why the difference? I understand car tires are "flat", because there are 4 of them. Bike's one are "curved", because only two of them to take curves. But I still don't understand the huge difference between them. I also know "rubber composition" is important: soft, half-soft, hard... But still don't get it. And why Metzeler is "top recommended" as an exclusive BMW tire? And please, do accept my apologies for: -more then "two stupid questions"; -my poor English writing and lack of technical knowledge. (Just trying to lear, you know.) Juan Jacob. It's as if the tire manufacturers make the tires wear quicker to sell more tires. The better handling a mc tire is the shorter the life of the tire. They could do better IMHO. > But still don't get it. And why Metzeler is "top recommended" as an > exclusive BMW tire? Another good question. My guess is "cost" - BMW gets satisfactory performance with Metzeler for less expense than Michelin. YMMV. > And please, do accept my apologies for: > > -more then "two stupid questions"; Sorry I couldn't give you better answers. > > -my poor English writing and lack of technical knowledge. Unplugging them and reconnecting them (a few times, if they're really bad) is usually sufficient. Most decent switches and connectors are "self-cleaning", which is to say they slide into position, thus scraping off crud to some degree. An exception is Alpha Delta's UHF coax switches, which I wouldn't use again if someone paid me to do so. :( But I digress. This is why dielectric grease, counterintuitive though it may be, works. It gets pushed out of the way where necessary, while protecting the surrounding surfaces -- which are not mating at the moment, but might be in the future if the connector gets jostled or shifted -- from corrosion. A connection which is gappy enough for dielectric grease to interfere was a poor connection to begin with. I wouldn't personally use abrasives except as a last resort in a pinch. Besides the plating which Brian mentions, which is sometimes present, any additional pitting that you introduce will just trap more contaminants and provide more surface area for potential corrosion. Just my meager experience. Oh, forgot -- the first time I did this on my bike, I used compressed air in the connectors, too. The P.O. did a lot of treks in the California desert, and there was orange dust in every cranny of the bike. :) - -- David Talkington Seattle '91 K75S - -- dtalk-ml@prairienet.org -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.7 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFG0lpz5FKhdwBLj4sRAqfLAJ9HjDG+fSYmKi6PFStsBd+2AXoauwCgmcPF XDjt7HFfVhurdikLSdsZQEA= =hWOy -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- ------------------------------

And dirt in the connection is not a good thing at all. That trapped dirt will NOT be blown out using compressed air as David notes he did later. Potentially worse, is if water enters the connection. Now it stays there enhancing corrosion. :(:( It is not an unalloyed "good". It does cost money that can affect manufacturing decisions, but it ain't there to begin with. Maybe for a reason. -- --- -------------------------------------------------------------------- Ambassador BMW MOA | Brian Curry | A society that gets rid of all its "DEERsSLAYER" | troublemakers goes downhill.
