If we're talking about the "D" shaped notch in the front of the crankcase, it is a pressure relief design. BMW tells us to keep it free of sealant during assembly, but there always seems to be some present when I see them. The official information is somewhere but I can't put my hands on it. I though it was in a service bulletin but I can't find it. I just checked the factory shop manual but it's not there either. Perhaps it's in a service school book somewhere, I know I've seen this information somewhere and it's just become habit to clear that area when I'm working on one. www.BeemerShop.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Oct 2007 17:21:22 -0400 From: Corky Benson <crbenson@equals42.com> Subject: [BMWTech] 1978 /7 I am rebuilding a '78 R80/7 with my son. I would guess that the bike was a crash repair, and that salvage parts were used. If the pads fit the calipers properly, I.e., they do not have any side play, they should work OK. I would look them over VERY carefully, though. Id more concerned by the obvious crash damage to the right caliper. I see from the wiring diagram in the Haynes manual there is a "Connection for special equipment". What's this for? Police lights/siren etc? Would this be a suitable place to take 12v off for the GPS? Is the connector readily accessable? 2) At some point soon I'd also like to add an auxiliary power socket. Unless I am much mistaken, the LT version had these so there would be a connection for them somewhere. Would this be the abovementioned connector on the civilian models? 3) Where's the most convenient place to put a power socket in terms of usability? You'll find those connections inside the relays box under the rear of the tank. Use your VOM and look for 12V and a ground and you're in business. You'll see several connectors in there not being used. Some are for a factory alarm system, and some are for special equipment. Could be for Police equipment, Factory Auxiliary Lights, etc. However, personally I like to have my GPS remain on even when I shut the bike off. You may or may not find unswitched power there. Check for power with the key off to determine that. That is, if you'd like unswitched power. I don't like to have to reboot my GPS and find the satellites every time I stop for a break or for gas, or just to check the GPS... >2) At some point soon I'd also like to add an auxiliary power socket. >Unless I am much mistaken, the LT version had these so there would be >a connection for them somewhere. Would this be the abovementioned >connector on the civilian models? The stock socket was installed on a small right angled bracket which screwed to the top of the coil cover. It had short wires with a fuse onto a fuse in the stock fusebox which was for this purpose. It is unswitched, that is live at all times and capable of enough juice to power heated clothing. >3) Where's the most convenient place to put a power socket in terms of >usability? I don't find the side socket to be the best place to plug in anything. I like my up front sockets and have three of them on my left kneepad. You'll find the left front is the best place to plug anything in. I found using the side socket for heated clothing I was more inclined to forget it's plugged in and walk away. Up front I can see it, plug in and out without getting off the bike, and know if it's plugged in or not. Plus I can keep track of the wires and don't have a wire working its way under my butt or leg, etc. http://easternbeaver.com/ Motorcycle Relay Kits, ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Oct 2007 09:21:15 -0500 From: Paul or Voni Glaves <p_vglaves@mindspring.com> Subject: [BMWTech] Mismatched Brake Calipers? > > I am new to the list and I just recently acquired a 1988 BMW R100RT. The best paint I found was Engine Black in rattle cans from my BMW dealer. That has, I have been told, been discontinued. The best substitute I've found is Rustoleum Satin Black. The UPC number is 2006677778. I got it at a Tru-Value hardware store, but it should be available widely. The last thing I used it on was a ToasterTan top brace. It was bare aluminum. After a quick wipe with acetone, I gave it two medium-thin coats, and baked it in my oven at 150 degrees F for several hours. It looks great, nearly like a black anodized finish. It is slightly glossier than the BMW paint, which was more like a semigloss, but way short of a high-gloss paint. It's very close to the original finish. You don't want to use a flat paint. It looks awful to begin with IMHO, and doesn't wear well, turning grayish in the weather very quickly. I haven't made this mistake, but I've seen the results of some who have. I will second this. I have used Rustolium satin black for many projects and it just works out well. Baking it in an oven does cause it to dry to its completed state faster. I put the oven on warm, wait for it to reach temperature, then turn the oven off and put the parts in. (wait for wife to leave first) Also, the directions say recoat within 2 hours or after 2 days. They mean it! If you recoat the next day it will lift the first coat off every time. Look at the relationship between the mounting ear and the brake hose - on both sides the brake hose is inside the mounting ear so they are a pair. However - they are not matched. the details like Brembo and the at the brake pad studs are different. Brembo did make a 38mm and 40mm versions ( i think those are the numbers) and BMW did make bikes with only one caliper. IMHO - even if they are mismatched there should not be a problem. Bikes with only one disk still work fine despite their not being symetrical. One may have been replaced with a later version or a larger one. If you have the 7mm of lever gap, the clutch should be disengaging completely but you can try reducing it to a smaller number to promote more disengagement if needed. I have that on my RS now at 150k miles. I think it just corroded through from years of exhaust gases; I've seen it on other bikes. It sounds like a Supertrapp, which isn't a good thing, so a new/used muffler is going on soon. -- anton at largiader.com http://largiader.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Oct 2007 10:41:12 -0700 (PDT) From: David Talkington <dtalk-ml@prairienet.org> Subject: [BMWTech] Re: Non standard settings -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Anton Largiader wrote: >> Project 2: Also last fall, I removed the internal fuel filter, and >> replaced it with an inexpensive external filter from the local auto parts >> store....Then I got to thinking about a fuel filter rupturing or leaking >> right above the exhaust pipe. > > I do a few of these relocations every year. The dread scenario, David, is that you have just refueled, got a load of bad gas, and cannot proceed without changing the fuel filter. Easier done if your fuel filter is somewhere besides inside the gas tank. Anton, I looked at mounting above the airbox, but a pretty busy location on my bike, and a lot of hose. I did look at fuel injection rated auto fuel filters, and they were all MUCH heavier construction than the BMW OEM. I had also read that there were some early burst failures of the OEM, first at the stamped logo, and then at the crimp seam. I guess you would know? Finally, I wasn't happy with the fuel hose loop running so close behind the right cylinder head, just thinking of heated fuel, maybe a silly concern? -- Dave Johnson Boone NC The Kilometer High City 1100RT V65 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Oct 2007 14:13:36 -0400 From: Anton Largiader <anton@largiader.com> Subject: Re: [BMWTech] Re: Non standard settings David Talkington wrote: > What is the motivation for doing this? Whereas on a K bike you can change the filter on a full tank (OK you have to dip your hand into gasoline, but...) on an Oilhead you can't. If you get a clogged filter from a load of bad fuel, logic dictates that the tank will be rather full when it affects you. Ever changed the filter on an RT at night in the rain on the side of the road with a full tank? Neither have I, and neither will the people who've had the conversion. Standard: remove fairing (both sides), siphon fuel out (into what?), remove tank, remove filter access plate, change filter, reassemble, hope that you can get the fuel back into the tank, hope the O-ring goes back into place, make sure the right-side throttle cable isn't out of place, etc. External: remove seat, change filter. The R1200ST comes with an external BMW filter mounted in the left forward fairing. -- anton at largiader.com http://largiader.com ------------------------------ ---------- Article Copyright (c) IBMWR and the author(s). On the airbox it's a non-issue. Fuel line from tank to filter, then forward on opposite side of bike, behind alternator, straight shot to fuel distributor. A big loop. The alternator space doesn't get so hot that BMW worries about it on the R1150 Adventure, and that fuel is hardly moving in the line. The fuel from the pump is always flowing pretty quickly, so I don't consider it an issue even with the Lentini location as long as the line is kept away from the cylinder. -- anton at largiader.com http://largiader.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Oct 2007 11:42:50 -0700 (PDT) From: David Talkington <dtalk-ml@prairienet.org> Subject: [BMWTech] Re: Re: Non standard settings -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Anton Largiader wrote: > David Talkington wrote: >> What is the motivation for doing this? Do you really gain enough > additional tank capacity to be worth the trouble? > > - -- > David Talkington David, The real advantage is the ability to easily replace the filter if one clogs on the road. I first did it on Voni's R1100RS since she spent her summers traveling solo all over North America. She would not be able to remove the fuel tank, empty it, lay it on its side (on the shoulder of the road?) remove the fuel pump plate, fish it all out, and change the filter. But she can loosen two hose clamps, change the filter, tighten the clamps, and head on down the road. I could do it the hard way beside the road if I had a replacement O ring with me - but much prefer to do it the easy way myself. I did take one precaution: instead of the BMW filter which is an aluminum body with a crimped end I use a Deautz 507 filter which has a steel body and a welded end cap. A bad weld would show up the first time it was pressurized, and thereafter it poses little risk of blowing off. Certainly a lot less risk than the little plastic quick fuel disconnects that BMW uses. Next replacement I'll take another look. What about crimp vs screw type hose clamps? The only liability I could imagine with the screw type is loosening over the life of the bike, since once the fule filter is removed there will hopefully be no reason to re-enter the fuel tank? How about the Oetiker clamps loosening with regularity which is well documented? Impulse loadings are bad on one shots. Chances of screw clamps loosening IMO are a LOT less. The mechanics are not conductive to loosening on FI rated clamps. Not the "slot" screw clamps. The good news. The leakage will be to the tank interior unless they blow off. Then it will still be to the interior, but injection pressure will not be made. -- --- -------------------------------------------------------------------- Ambassador BMW MOA | Brian Curry | A society that gets rid of all its "DEERsSLAYER" | troublemakers goes downhill.
